VoIP for Schools

A Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone system transmits voice and data using an internet connection, rather than a traditional landline.  From 2025, BT plan to switch off the analogue telephone system and all UK phone line users will have to make phone calls over broadband using VoIP systems. How does VoIP work?

IP phones can be installed in a school office or classroom.  The phones operate in the same way as a traditional landline phone and include voicemail, call recording, caller ID and other similar features.

The only difference is the IP phone is usually connected by a single Ethernet connection.  Cordless connections are possible with an IP phone that supports Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections.  VoIP calls can also be made using a wide range of internet-ready devices including desktop computers and mobile phones.

Preparing for the analogue telephone switch off in 2025

BT has announced that it plans to switch off all public switched telephone network (PSTN) services by 2025.  The PTSN includes telephone lines and hardware used by traditional analogue telephone services and ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) lines are already being phased out.

From 2025, all UK phone line users will make phone calls over broadband using VoIP systems, delivered via a fibre network.
